Bob's Geek Code

The Code of the Geeks© (otherwise known as the Geek Code) is a method used by geeks to describe themselves and identify kindred spirits over the internet, especially when using e-mail or USENET Newsgroups. It was developed and wass maintained by Robert A. Hayden (hayden@geekcode.com). The current version is 3.12. Below is my Geek Code, with links to explanations of each element as it applies to me. The entire Geek Code is available via the World Wide Web (as an HTML page) at http://www.geekcode.com/, and provides a complete explanation of the codes and symbology.

GCS - Geek of Computer Science


As this is the discipline of my degree, and I am currently employed as a Software Engineer, this is the most appropriate.

GAT - Geek of All Trades


The following codes also apply:

GL Geek of Literature - I minored in English, and write short stories and poetry.
GM Geek of Math - I minored in Mathematics, and do statistical analysis and numeric theory as part of my job.
GP Geek of Philosophy - I minored in Philosophy, concentrating on Symbolic Logic and Philosophy of Science.
GS Geek of Science - One of my hobbies is following the latest developments in the various branches of Physics and Anthropology.

APPEARANCE


Dress: d- I'm usually in jeans and a t-shirt.
Shape: s+:++ I'm a little taller than most, and I'm a linebacker candidate.
Age: !a It's none of your business how old I am.

COMPUTERS


Computers: C++$ Computers are a large part of my existence, and I get paid for it!
Unix: UA++$H++$L+++S++$U++$ I have several Unix accounts, running AIX, HPUX, Linux, Sun OS, and Ultrix (and probably other variants, if I bothered to check), and I use Unix at work. I am also a Linux SysAdmin.
Perl: P++ Perl is a powerful programming tool. I don't write shell scripts anymore because I write them in Perl.
Linux: L+++ I use Linux exclusively on my system. I monitor comp.os.linux.* and even answer questions sometimes.
Emacs: E--- Emacs sucks! vi forever!!!
World Wide Web: W++ I have a homepage. I surf daily. My homepage is advertised in my .signature.
USENET News: N++ I read all the news in a select handful of groups.
USENET Oracle: !o I have no interest in the USENET Oracle.
Kibo: K++ I've read Kibo.
Microsoft Windows: w++()$ I write MS Windows programs in C and C++. I've written DLLs. I even get paid to use it. But I still don't have to like it, do I?
OS/2: O? Never tried OS/2.
Macintosh: M- Macs suck. All real geeks have a character prompt.
VMS: V--$ I would rather smash my head repeatedly into a brick wall than suffer the agony of working with VMS. It's reminiscent of a dead and decaying pile of moose droppings. Unix rules the universe. I've used VMS as part of my job.

POLITICS


Political and Social Issues: PS+ Nobody has the right to tell anybody else what to do.
Politics and Economic Issues: PE Distrust both government and business.
Cypherpunks: Y+ I have an interest and concern in privacy issues, but in reality I am not really all that active or vocal.
PGP: PGP->++ I don't have anything to hide, but I support the use of it, have the latest version, and use it when the need arises.

ENTERTAINMENT


Star Trek: t++@ TOS is a damn fine TV show and is one of the only things good on television, but the newer series and movies aren't quite so interesting or entertaining.
Babylon 5: 5 I've seen it, I am pretty indifferent to it.
X-Files: X@ Ho hum. Just another Fox show. I do enjoy some of the shows that aren't about the great alien conspiracy.
Role Playing: R- Gosh, what an utter waste of time!
Television: tv(+) I usually watch only the shows that are actually worthwhile, such as those found on PBS. I do tend to watch some tv every day, though.
Books: b++++ I read a book a day. I (literally!) have library cards in three states. I have discount cards from every major bookstore. I also subscribe to 20 different magazines.
Dilbert: DI+++ I am a Dilbert prototype.
DOOM!: D--- To hell with Doom, I miss Zork.
The Geek Code: G+ I once was G+++, but the new versions are getting too long and too complicated.

LIFESTYLE


Education: e++(+++)>++++ Got a Bachelor's degree (Computer Science) and a Post-Bacc (Computer Information Systems). Hope to get a Ph.D. someday.
Housing: h(----)(-) Friends come over to visit once in a while to talk about Geek things. There is (usually) a place for them to sit. I am married with children - Al Bundy can sympathize, and my wife is a registered Geek.
Relationships: r+++ Found someone, dated, and am now married.
Sex: y++++ I have a little rug rat to prove I've been there. Besides, with a kid around, who has time for sex?
